The Herald Sun today published an article about Hydrogen Systems Australia playing a part in helping Victoria become a hydrogen jobs hub. HSA’s patented technology promises to be a game-changer on a global scale and will drive the cost of producing hydrogen to $2 per kilogram well before 2030.
Green Machine: Hydrogen Systems Australia’s Brian Power and Matt Wagenfeld with today’s edition of the Herald Sun.
HYDROGEN Systems Australia is a Melbourne-based energy company developing “green hydrogen” technology and says Victoria has the potential to become the jobs engine for the emerging industry, reports the Herald Sun on page 12 today (Tuesday June 15th 2021).
HSA executive director Brian Power says his company’s exciting Research & Development venture, Project Shield, is well under way with a provisional patent in place for the game-changing technology.
The report in the Herald Sun continues: “An International Energy Agency (IEA) report that outlined the pathway to slashing pollution by the middle of the century recently explained the role renewables and hydrogen would play in powering electricity and transport sectors during the next two decades. Federal and state governments are looking at hydrogen as a future energy staple, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison pledged $276m for four new hydrogen hubs.”
“Hydrogen Systems Australia chief Brian Power said there was now an opportunity to intensify research and development to ensure ‘jobs of the future’ in Victoria. ‘It’s the hottest market on the planet,’ Mr Power said. ‘We have got a lot of other states that are pushing their barrows, but Melbourne and South Australia have the best opportunities because they have manufacturing and automotive skills. There’s a lot of learning, but it doable.’
The Herald Sun article stated the IEA report on net zero emissions by 2050 points to a massive expansion of electricity and hydrogen vehicles over the next two decades. It also forecasts large increases in the generation of low-emission biofuels and hydrogen to offset a fall in coal and gas power generation.
“These systems will have the ability to create hydrogen using a technology that is not only more cost effective, but more efficient.” – Brian Power
Cost effective and more efficient
As reported in the Herald Sun, hydrogen is produced when water – made up of hydrogen and oxygen – is ‘split’ using electricity, often via a mass system called an electrolyser. When that electricity is produced as a renewable energy source it is referred to as green hydrogen. Mr Power said his company Hydrogen Systems Australia, which is seeking major investors, has recently patented a technology using plasma to create hydrogen.
The article continues: “Mr Power and his team told shareholders that this was ‘not only more cost-effective, but more efficient’ and he was confident that they could drive down the price of producing hydrogen to $2 a kilogram to export into booming markets. The company is prioritising smaller-scale systems that could supply remote communities, towns or resorts locally, rather than large-scale power plants.
‘Green Hydrogen to me is smart business,’ Mr Power said. ‘They are the jobs of the future and there are lots of them – if we can build a hydrogen industry, it’s jobs for our kids and future generations.’
Green Hydrogen environmentally friendly
Hydrogen offers a clean, green, renewable energy mix that is kind to our land. As HSA’s Renee Golland says: “It is something that future generations can be proud of: the path to a smarter, cheaper, cleaner and more reliable supply of energy without a reliance on fossil fuels or carbon dioxide-spewing diesel generators. Hydrogen also is an investment that is future-focused, with countries around the world already preparing for growth with advocacy, engagement and legislation changes.”
